Child Labor – still a sorry state

Shamsuddin, a twelve-year-old child who is studying at a government school, thinks it is his responsibility to work in the Sabzi Mandi in the scorching heat to feed his family. “I daily leave for Mandi right after offering the Fajr prayers and what else I can do? I am helpless.” says Shams.

The
state of children in Pakistan who are vulnerable due to social inequalities is
miserable. Pakistan ranks 6th on the Global Slavery Index 2016 in the
prevalence of child labor. There are countless children like Shamsuddin who are
involved in labor all over Pakistan.

The
labor involves hazardous work which damages the mental health of the child.
United Nations explains “hazardous work” for children in the following manner:

“Any work which is likely to jeopardize
children’s physical, mental or moral health, safety or morals should not be
done by anyone under the age of 18.”
